University of Helsinki Language Centre / Open-enrollment courses The Language Services Unit of the University of Helsinki offers Finnish courses for foreigners who are not enrolled as students at the University of Helsinki throughout the year. New courses begin in September and January, and usually last for a whole term. Shorter intensive courses are also available in the summer (June, July, August). There is a tuition fee for all the courses. Further information: Language
Services Department of Finnish The courses offered by the Department of Finnish are intended for international students who have received their pre-university education outside Finland. All courses are free of charge and open exclusively to students enrolled at the University of Helsinki (exchange students / scholarship holders, undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as students who have been granted the right to pursue non-graduate studies). Courses are offered during the academic year. Most courses last one term. All courses are free of charge. Elementary Finnish courses for exchange students (basic course and continuation course, 2 local credits / 4 ECTS credits each) are designed for visiting students (e.g. ISEP, Nordplus, Socrates, Tempus). The aim of these courses is to enable students to use Finnish in simple every-day situations. The language of instruction is mainly English. Finnish 14 courses (5 local credits / 10 ECTS credits each) are intended for those international students at the University of Helsinki whose degree requirements include compulsory Finnish studies. Space permitting, visiting students can be accepted. There are four different levels no previous knowledge of Finnish is required for the first course (Finnish 1). The aim of these courses is to give the students the ability to discuss, read and write within their main subject of study, after completing the whole block. The language of instruction is mainly Finnish. The Finnish Language and Culture Degree Programme is offered entirely in Finnish. Courses are open for those who have completed Finnish 4 (see above) with minimum grade of good or have completed similar studies elsewhere. Visiting students may choose freely courses of this programme, assuming they have an adequate knowledge of Finnish. The Finnish Language and Culture Degree Programme consists of Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Module courses (20 local credits / 40 ECTS credits each). The aim of the Basic Module studies is to improve the students skills in the Finnish language. This module also contains grammar courses as well as courses in Finnish history, culture and literature. In the Intermediate Module students can enhance their Finnish skills and choose more advanced theoretical studies in Finnish language and culture. In order to complete the Advanced Module students may incorporate into their Finnish Language and Culture programme other courses from the Department of Finnish, as well as courses from other departments (e.g. folklore, history, sociology) to further develop their ability to express themselves in Finnish and to acquire more specific knowledge of Finnish language, society and culture.
