University of Jyväskylä Language Centre The Language Centre arranges basic Finnish courses (Finnish 15, 23 local credits / 46 ECTS credits each) both before and during the academic year. Most courses last one term; intensive one-month beginners courses are usually given in August. The courses are free of charge for degree students, exchange students and other members of the university community. Outside applicants may be accepted for a fee of 85 euros per one local credit course (2 ECTS credits), 170 euros per 2 local credit course (4 ECTS credits) and 255 euros per 3 local credit course (6 ECTS credits). Survival Finnish is intended for students who want to study some basics but do not plan to continue their Finnish studies further. Finnish 15, then, form the basis for further independent acquisition of Finnish. A student who has successfully completed Finnish 4 has sufficient structural knowledge and communicative skills for studying in Finnish, but further work on vocabulary and stylistic variation is still necessary. Thus Finnish 5 focuses on special, idiomatic features of Finnish vocabulary and oral and written skills needed especially in academic contexts. Special courses focus on individual language skills (speaking and listening, writing, reading and grammar) and they are designed for students at intermediate or advanced level. They are offered each year, depending on demand and resources. Courses on special topics can also be arranged if a sufficient number of students are interested. Further information University
