Language Centre

The Language Centre offers survival, beginners’ and continuation courses in Finnish language for foreign students and scholars. The courses are intended primarily for degree students and exchange students of the University of Turku. Space permitting, post-graduate students, scholars and staff members at the University of Turku (as well as Åbo Akademi University and Turku School of Economics and Business Administration) can also be admitted to the courses.

Only registered students of the University of Turku have free admission to the courses. All others have to apply for admission before the course begins.

Department of Finnish and General Linguistics

The Department of Finnish and General Linguistics offers Finnish Language and Culture Studies for international students with previous studies in Finnish language. The programme consists of two parts: basic studies and intermediate studies (20 local credits / 40 ECTS credits each). The first part deepens the participants’ knowledge of the use and structure of Finnish and it also includes courses in Finnish literature and Finnish society. All courses in basic studies are meant exclusively for foreign students.

The intermediate studies are meant for students with advanced knowledge in Finnish language. It consists of advanced practical and theoretical studies in Finnish language and linguistics (13 local credits / 26 ECTS credits), and of studies in Finnish culture and society (7 local credits / 14 ECTS credits). The courses in cultural and social issues are offered by different departments of the University of Turku. Some of the courses in the intermediate studies are meant exclusively for foreign students, but for the most part the courses are for both Finnish and foreign students.

The programme is equivalent of minor subjects studies at the University of Turku. The language of instruction in the programme is Finnish.

Prerequisites for this programme: General eligibility for university studies and a good knowledge of Finnish.
