Department of Modern Finnish and Translation

The Department of Modern Finnish and Translation offers studies in Finnish Language and Culture. The major subject Modern Finnish as a Foreign Language is intended for students who have begun their studies of Finnish abroad and who wish to continue their studies in Finland. The programme is oriented towards modern Finnish, its technolects, and contrastive and translation studies. The instruction is carried out in Finnish and since the propaedeutical courses take more than a year it would be useful for the students to have a working knowledge of Finnish on their arrival in Vaasa.

The programme consists of study units (20 local credits / 30 ECTS credits each): basic studies, subject studies, advanced level studies and the MA thesis. The studies are fairly equally divided between linguistics and literature.

Students can supplement their studies for an academic degree (BA; 120 local credits / 180 ECTS credits or MA; 160 local credits / 240 ECTS credits) with other subjects (40 – 80 local credits / 60 - 120 ECTS credits) which widen the picture of Finland and Scandinavia; these subjects are offered by various university departments in Vaasa. Postgraduate students are also admitted to pursue advanced level studies in the special fields of the department.

Application deadline is the end of February each year.
