It is a requirement of Finnish law that you notify the Population
Register Center of your change of address no earlier than
a month before the day of your move, and no later than a
week after the day of your move. When you notify the Finnish
postal service, Posti,
of your change of address, they make this very simple by
cooperating with several authorities. For example, Posti
provides the Maistraattit (Local Register
Offices) and the Population Register Centre with
your Notification
of Move. It further automatically informs
several companies and organizations of your new address. See Automatic Contact Information Updating for
details.
Address
Notification
The easiest way to submit a notification of
move is to:
- use the online service.
You can make an online notification using your Internet
Bank access codes, a chip ID card, or Posti username, or
- call the Move Service
Line Mon - Fri 8 am to 8 pm, Sat 9 am to 2 pm on 0200
71000. Normal charges apply, including for queuing

- submit a form that you can pick up at
a post office or local register office.
If you go personally to the post office
you will also be given postcards for informing your new address
to friends and relatives in Finland (cards and postage
free of charge).
Changes of address
from Finland to abroad and to Finland from abroad cannot
be made by phone.
Automatic Contact Information Updating
When you file your change of address
notification, in addition to notifying the Population Register
Centre and Maistraattit as mentioned above, Posti automatically
informs a large group of companies and organizations
of your new address. You can check the list
of organizations included, or opt
out of the service, at www.posti.fi/english/movinghome/services/automaticupdateofaddresses.html
When you receive the letter confirming your change of address
from Posti, check the companies and organizations
which have been informed. Also, don't
forget to personally inform other parties concerned of your
new address, including:
- The house or real estate manager
- The electricity company and the waterworks
- The telephone company
- Newspaper and magazine publishers
- the library
- other companies and organizations of which you are a customer
