Cable TV and Digiboxes

Please note that 'cable TV' in this section refers not only to channels broadcast over physical cable, but also to terrestrial TV (broadcast "over the air").

The most common ways to receive television broadcasts in Finland are antenna reception and cable reception. Satellite reception is also possible, but not common. It is essential to know how broadcasts are received in your building to be able to buy the right digital receiver (check with the building manager if you live in an apartment).

A digital receiver, such as a digibox* or digitv**, is required to receive TV in Finland since all television broadcasts were transformed to digital on 31st August 2007.
 * A digibox, or "set top box", is a digital receiver/decoder which can be used with an analogue or digital TV. The ability to record on an internal hard drive has become standard on these units - tallentava digiboksi (recordable digibox) in Finnish.
** A digitv, or "digital television", is a television with an integrated digital receiver.

Before Buying a Digibox, find out whether you live in a "cable" or "terrestrial" building!
You will recognise the correct digital receiver for your building by its code:
DVB-T - for antenna reception; also known as a "terrestrial digibox"
DVB-C - for cable TV reception; also known as a "cable digibox"
DVB-S - for satellite reception; also known as a "satellite digibox"

New digitv's usually have hybrid DVB-T / DVB-C receivers capable of receiving terrestrial and cable broadcasts, but if you're buying one make sure you check the codes.

PayTV / Cable TV Operators in Finland

13 free television channels are available in Finland, although a TV license is required. Additional channels are available in a variety of packages from operators throughout the country. There are about 80 channels currently available, depending on your package.

PayTV channels are sold by TV Viihde (Tel: 0207 920 780) and PlusTV (Tel: 010 309 8008).

Local Operators: You can also call your local operator for information on the packages available in your area. Few of the following sites have information in any language but Finnish. Many are actually the local telephone company, which also operates the TV service. In this case look for the Kaapeli-tv link, or similar. Hopefully a contact phone number is obvious; if not, look for Yhteystiedot (Company Information).
