Introduction to Finnish Early Education
Early childhood education is for children under school age, usually from about 9 months old after the period of parental leave, and provided either by municipal or private day-care centres, or at the child's home.
Infofinland.fi: Early Childhood Education
Permanent residents of Finland may apply for Child Care Allowances from Kela kela.fi/child-care-allowances.
Preschool education is compulsory in Finland - children must attend preschool for one year before comprehensive education begins. Children normally enter preschool the year they turn six, and comprehensive school at the age of seven. Preschool is organised by municipalities, and takes place in either a municipal kindergarten or private child care program (including family home care).
The average preschool day is a 4-hour half-day, including a meal, and is free-of-charge for permanent residents. Full-day child care is also available - not completely free, but heavily subsidized.
Children whose native language is not Finnish or Swedish will study Finnish or Swedish as a foreign language, and they can study their own native language if such education is available. Children can receive education in either their own religion or in ethics.
Preschool education enrolment can be applied for at your local municipal website.
